We checked out 1DP: Combat Era, and this is much more than a collection of matches or a recap of what happened inside the ring. The documentary takes viewers into one of the most intense and controversial periods in One Division Pro history and, more importantly, gives the people who actually lived through it an opportunity to tell the story from their perspectives.

The Championship Dispute

At the center of everything is 1DP Champion Phinehas Sun and his disputed championship victory over Rochie Roach. Rather than simply telling viewers who won and what happened next, Combat Era explores what carrying that championship meant as the situation around it continued to escalate. Sun's perspective is especially important because you're hearing from the person standing in the middle of the controversy rather than watching the story be told entirely about him.

Then you have Rochie Roach, the former champion whose side is equally important to understanding why this period became what it did. The documentary allows the championship dispute to feel like more than another wrestling rivalry. There are different perspectives, different motivations and very real emotions attached to what happened.

"Money" Miguel, the #1 contender, adds another layer. While so much attention is naturally placed on the champion and former champion, Miguel represents the person waiting for his opportunity while everything surrounding the title becomes increasingly volatile. His inclusion helps expand the story beyond two individuals and shows how the Combat Era affected the championship picture as a whole.

The Story Behind the Story

What really makes the documentary work, though, is that the wrestlers aren't left to carry the entire story themselves.

Executive Producer Sean Croxx, Associate Producer Brian Miller, members of 1DP management and the creative team provide another perspective on how this era developed behind the scenes. Hearing from the people responsible for navigating One Division Pro during this period gives the documentary additional depth. You're seeing the consequences in the ring while also hearing about the decisions and circumstances surrounding them.

That's where Combat Era starts feeling less like a wrestling recap and more like an actual documentary.

Comic-Style Storytelling

Another major standout for us is the production and use of the animated comic-style reels throughout the film.

These sequences are incredibly well done.

Instead of using animation simply as filler between interviews, the comic-inspired presentation becomes part of the storytelling. It helps illustrate important moments, transitions the viewer between different chapters and gives certain events a larger-than-life feeling without taking away from the real footage and interviews.

Mixing backstage footage, candid interviews, wrestling footage, commentary and animated comic storytelling could easily have felt like too many different ideas competing with one another. Here, they complement each other.

The animation gives Combat Era its own visual identity while the interviews keep everything grounded in the people involved.

The People Drive the Story

That's probably our biggest takeaway from the documentary: the people are allowed to drive the story.

Phinehas Sun isn't presented simply as "the champion." Rochie Roach isn't simply "the former champion." Money Miguel isn't just "the contender." And management isn't treated as a faceless authority operating somewhere in the background.

You begin to understand how each person occupied a different position inside the same increasingly complicated situation—and why the championship eventually became more than something everyone was fighting to win.
